Good article on funding education
[This letter was received in response to an article in our September 2007 issue – Back To School: Funding An Ongoing Education]
What I have seen out there is that most companies are forcing people out of the IT field by not offering them continued funding of their education. That includes contractors. Some contracting companies such as Tek Systems offer contractors CBT’s for long term contractors. This means, if they have the time, the contractor can continue to upgrade their skills. Other outsourcing companies like Kelly Services do not. CompuCom does and pays for a bachelor’s or master’s degree up to $5,000.00 annually. But there is the philosophy out there that if you pay for an employee’s education they will leave you for a better position. I have found that people who pull that stunt are few and far between. Education may not be the layer on the cake as stated in your article, but it makes a difference between keeping the job interesting or not.
But I thought the article was very good and I wish that companies would pay for contractor’s education and some benefits, not just employees. In that way, the benefit goes two ways and not just one (to the company).
