Now that the merry month of May has come, it’s time to brace for the arrival in movie theaters of the summertime hordes. Not hordes of moviegoers, but hordes of superheroes and supervillains. Actually, Hollywood didn’t even wait for May (which hardly counts as summer anyway) this year.
The long-awaited Marvel Comics megamovie Avengers: Infinity War showed up in theaters last week. You know, just in case you’ve been wondering what Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Bucky Barnes, Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Falcon, War Machine, Black Panther, Doctor Stranger, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Hulk, or Spider-Man have been up to lately.
Seriously, that’s just one movie, and it has so many superheroes in it that we forgot to even mention Nebula, Wong, Mantis, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, The Collector, Pepper Potts, and Ant Man and Hawkeye, who don’t actually appear in the movie, but are mentioned by name. Also not appearing in the movie are all of the Marvel characters in Deadpool 2, which opens May 18.
Oh, and Ant Man will be here in July for Ant Man and The Wasp (which, it would appear, also features The Wasp). And there’s a Captain Marvel movie coming up next March, and so on and so forth ad infinitum.
One the one hand, people sure seem to like these movies, which all by itself is plenty of reason for Hollywood to keep making them. On the other hand, some of the stuff that’s coming up is maybe a little extraneous. I mean, do we really care whether there’s ever another movie about Venom (a Spider-Man villain who already made an appearance in Sony’s Spider-Man 3)?
And yet, here comes Tom Hardy as Venom on Oct. 5. We think Hollywood could use a little help. And since certified IT professionals are both smart people and problem solvers, at the end of our most recent Salary Survey, where the questions are sometimes a wee bit off-topic, we asked survey respondents to weigh in. Which cinematic superheroes is the public actually eager to see more of?
Here’s what we learned:
Q: I need another three or four more superhero movies starring:
No. No I don’t. I don’t need any more superhero movies ever again. — 32.6 percent
Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man — 14.5 percent
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — 13.2 percent
Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman —15.2 percent
I like romantic comedies. — 9.8 percent
Baby Groot as Baby Groot — 7.4 percent
Do you think Michael Keaton would be interested in doing a Batman movie with Christopher Nolan? — 4.6 percent
That twerpy British kid as Spider-Man — 2.7 percent
OK, so maybe certified IT professionals, as a group, are a little bit comic book-ed and superhero-ed out. What was our first clue, you ask? Call it a hunch.
The again, it would appear that a not insignificant number of certified IT professionals like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man as much as everyone else seems to. And there’s certainly interest in seeing more of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Even Baby Groot has some fans. (Can you tell that we wrote this question at the end of last summer?)
Oh, and wow, Tom Holland. You just really aren’t connecting at all — or at least not with the IT crowd. More survey respondents would rather see another Michael Keaton Batman movie (albeit one directed by Christopher Nolan), than are itching to revisit Spider-Man’s friendly neighborhood with the 21-year-old star of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
