In the still-short history of the internet, buying and selling goods and services has rapidly come to account for a substantial percentage of everything that happens online. There is a vital and growing demand for technology to facilitate and secure all of those millions of transactions, and California-based Magento is in the thick of the ongoing scramble to meet those needs.

Magento's open source e-commerce platform handles more than $100 billion worth of transactions every year, and Magento certification can get you right into the heart of the action. The Magento Certified Developer credential popped through at No. 14 on our most recent Salary Survey 75 list.

Here's what the salary picture looks like for Magento Certified Developer holders who responded to the Salary Survey:

The largest single body of Magento Certified Developer holders to participate in the survey is made up of U.S. residents: 39.1 percent of those surveyed. We also heard from credential holders in 8 other countries: Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

As is often the case in our Deep Focus research, almost all Magento Certified Developer holders who responded to the survey are men, though we did hear from a handful of women (4.3 percent of those surveyed). In a distinct variation from the norm, however, we didn't hear from a single individual age 45 or older. Every single Magento Certified Developer holder to participate in the survey is either between the ages of 25 and 34 (56.5 percent of respondents) or between the ages of 35 and 44 (43.5 percent).

Nearly 75 percent of Magento Certified Developer holders who participated in the survey have an educational background that includes time spent at a college or university. The highest level of education completed by most is either a bachelor's degree (39.1 percent of those surveyed) or master's degree (21.7 percent), with 8.8 percent having topped out at an associate's degree, while 4.3 percent climbed as high as a professional degree. The rest either stepped away from formal education after graduating from high school (8.7 percent) or completed some level of post-high school technical training (17.4 percent) but never got a college degree.

Among all Magento Certified Developer holders surveyed, 95.8 percent are employed full-time, while the remaining 4.2 percent have part-time jobs. Among those who have full-time jobs, most are putting in either the standard 40 hours per week (30.4 percent of respondents) or work between 41 and 50 hours per week (43.5 percent). The rest have a weekly schedule that calls for them to put ine either more than 50 hours (8.7 percent of those surveyed) or be at work between 31 and 39 hours (17.4 percent).

In terms of workplace standing, the largest single group of Magento Certified Developer holders are at the senior specialist level (62.1 percent). The rest, in descending order, are either senior managers (17.2 percent), rank-and-file employees (13.8 percent), or executives (6.9 percent).

While we typically hear from veteran certified professionals, the Magento Certified Developer contingent is less experienced as a whole. Most have worked in a role that directly utilizes one or more of their certified skills for either between 3 and 5 years (34.5 percent of respondents) or between 6 and 8 years (37.9 percent). The rest have been plying their certified skills for either between zero years (1 to 11 months) and 2 years (3.4 percent of those surveyed), between 9 and 10 years (17.2 percent), or for more than a decade (7 percent).

Finally, here's the view of Magento Certified Developer holders on key questions from the survey about how certification impacts job performance:
