Based in Canada, the nonprofit Linux Professional Institute operates probably the most well-rounded, top-to-bottom Linux certification program in the industry. The cornerstone credential of that lineup is LPIC-1: Linux Administrator, which checked in at No. 56 on our most recent Salary Survey 75 list.

Here's what the salary picture looks like for LPIC-1: Linux Administrator holders who responded to the Salary Survey:

The largest single body of LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders to participate in the survey is made up of U.S. residents (67.6 percent of those surveyed), but we also heard from credential holders in eight other countries: Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Taiwan.

Most of the LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders who responded to the survey are men, but not all of them — 8.8 percent of those surveyed are women. Generally speaking, the pool of credential holders is unusually youthful, with 20.6 percent of respondents between the ages of 25 and 34 and 47.1 percent between the ages of 35 and 44. Out of the remaining 31 percent of respondents, 17.6 percent are between the ages of 45 and 54 and 14.7 percent are between the ages of 55 and 64.

Roughly 85 percent of LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders who responded to the survey have an educational background that includes time spent at a college or university. The highest level of education completed by most LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders is either a bachelor's degree (50 percent of those surveyed), master's degree (14.7 percent), associate's degree (6.2 percent), or doctorate (2.9 percent). The outliers are the 6.2 percent of respondents who completed some level of technical training after high school, the 3 percent who exited the realm of formal education after getting a high school diploma, and the 5.6 percent who are currently students.

There's a strongly positive employment outlook for LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders: 94.4 percent of survey respondents are employed full-time and  2.8 percent have part-time jobs, with the remaining 2.8 percent out of work. Among those with full-time jobs, most are at work either between 41 and 50 hours per week (32.3 percent of those surveyed) or for the standard 40 hours per week (55.9 percent). The rest are either punching the clock for more than 50 hours per week (6.2 percent of respondents) or between 31 and 39 hours per week (5.6 percent).

More than 80 percent of those surveyed are (or were, pre-COVID 19) spending most of those hours in a traditional workplace, working at home either 10 or fewer hours per week (73.5 percent) or between 10 and 20 hours (8.7 percent). After that, there's a little bit of everything: 6 percent work between 21 and 30 hours per week from home, 2.9 percent work between 31 and 39 hours per week from home, 5.9 percent work 40 hours per week from home, and 3 percent work more than 40 hours per week from home.

In terms of workplace standing, the largest single group of LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders we heard from are employed at the senior specialist level (51.4 percent of those surveyed). The rest, in descending order, are either specialists (21.6 percent of respondents), rank-and-file employees (13.5 percent), managers (5.4 percent), senior managers (2.7 percent),  or executives (5.4 percent).

A core 51.4 percent of the LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders who responded to the survey are IT veterans, having worked in a role the directly utilizes their certified skills for more than a decade. The rest have been plying their certified skills for either between zero years (1 to 11 months) and 2 years (10.8 percent of respondents), between 3 and 5 years (21.6 percent), between 6 and 8 years (8.1 percent), or between 9 and 10 years (8.1 percent).

Finally, here's the view of LPIC-1 Linux Administrator holders on key questions from the survey about how certification impacts job performance:
