The saying goes that America is a land of opportunity. Certainly in the minds of many, if not most, the word opportunity in that expression refers to some form of gainful employment.  In that sense, it probably feels like almost all of the opportunities to be found in America in 2018 require some level of understanding of information technology (IT).

And whether or not you work in IT, or use IT products at work, IT innovation is driving both job creation and economic growth in the United States. There’s plenty of evidence to back that assertion in the just-released Cyberstates report, the annual guide to “national, state, and metropolitan area tech sector and tech workforce analytics” compiled by tech industry association CompTIA.

For example, Cyberstates estimates that the direct economic output of U.S. tech industry is $1.6 trillion, or 9.2 percent of total U.S. economic activity. The report also finds that there are 11.5 million tech workers in the United States, and that the tech industry created 194,000 new jobs just in the past 12 months. The average annual income of IT workers? How about a tidy $112,890.

That last figure is actually more or less right in line with our own 2018 Salary Survey findings. Based on input from certified IT professionals in all 50 U.S. states, we calculated average annual income at $115, 670.

Out of the aforementioned 11.5 million tech U.S. tech workers, CompTIA estimates that 1.4 million are software and web developers — members of the largest and fastest-growing IT industry job category. Which likely means that quite a few of the 2.8 million new tech job postings that popped up in 2017 are seeking qualified web and software development professionals.

For example, with a single click, you can see at a glance that tech workers in Utah have an average annual income of between $76,865 and $83,638, whereas the range in California is between $109,396 and $161,897, and the range in South Dakota is between $63,567 and $76,864.
