Who are you?
What kind of person are you? That should give you some big clues about the type of IT job or certification path you’d like to pursue on your quest for career greatness. In the October issue of Certification Magazine we look at the benefits and the risks of specialty certs versus pursuing a more generalist path in ‘Finding Your Career Coordinates.’ If I was an IT cat, and not just a humble editor writing about you, I honestly can’t say for sure which path would appeal to me.
There’s a certain cache to the specialty road because specialists who know the IT market can actually impact which areas are headed for a boom, and after time, if they choose, their breadth of experience could lead to a generalist track. On the other hand, the generalist path appeals to me because it is so open and so flexible. There’s no where you can’t go, and you won’t put yourself at the mercurial whim of the industry at large exposing yourself to that sad land of defunct technology platforms, which can affect specialists if they’re not savvy. Keeping it loose offers stability and agility.
It’s a tough decision to make. Make use of certmag.com’s online forums to bounce ideas or potential plans of your peers. Ultimately, not even us highly engaged and interested CertMag folks can help you determine who you are, but we can provide some clues to help you figure it out.
