Java technology continues to grow as a top content platform for mobile data services. Sun Microsystems Inc. recently announced two new professional certifications and training programs in Java technology: the Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer for Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) and the Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services. Each certification is $150 (U.S.), and both will be offered first in English, then in multiple languages, at authorized Prometric Testing Centers worldwide later this year.

The Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer for J2ME certification was designed for Sun Certified Java programmers who create mobile applications using Java technology for cell phones or “smart” devices. The Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services certification was designed to aid enterprises interested in providing information exchange and developing Web services applications using Java technology. This offering will be available for purchase later this year.

“The whole smart device market is exploding into not millions, but billions of potential platforms that we can interact with from a Java perspective,” said Terry Erdle, vice president Worldwide Marketing Services and Solutions, Sun Microsystems Inc. “Sun’s certifications play a central role in our strategy. From a development of community perspective, it’s extremely important that people have access to the right kind of information and certification. It’s great from a career development perspective for individuals; it’s good for our partners, our constituent companies and customer companies because it gives them a standard by which they can judge the efficacy of the technologists that are building their mission-critical platforms.”

Sun will continue to invest in Java certifications and training and work closely with partners to ensure that IT professionals maintain the highest skill levels to set up and maintain complex Java engagements. “Today’s new offerings will help programmers and developers maintain leading-edge skill sets and gain universally recognized credentials, allowing businesses to maximize their technology investments and enhance their competitive advantage,” said Erdle.
