Customer relationship management (CRM) software provider Siebel Systems has announced it will run and support its business applications on Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9. This is the first Linux platform Siebel has opted to operate its CRM systems on, said Bruce Lowry, director of global public relations at Novell, speaking from the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco.
“The significant thing about that is Siebel was really the last of the big enterprise software players not to have a Linux offering,” he said of the agreement. “It’s not an exclusive arrangement, in the sense that we’ve had them sign a deal that says they won’t run on any other Linux (systems), but it’s the only platform that they’ve announced they’re planning to run on at this stage.
“In terms of the bigger picture, for us it’s another proof point in the growth of the ISV (independent software vendor) ecosystem around Linux. The knock on Linux was that it had good performance for the cost and all that, but what could you get to run on it? When you’ve got SAP, Oracle and soon Siebel running their enterprise apps on Linux, that pretty much answers that question.”
Siebel’s product development experts will collaborate with Novell’s engineering organization to maximize the advantages derived from the two products in concert. The partnership also will provide support for standards-based computing solutions and optimize the Siebel suite of applications to meet the performance and scalability needs of organizations. “We already have engineers working together,” Lowry said. “We aren’t putting out any specific target dates, but the hope is that we’ll have this all ready to go with the next major rev of Siebel.
The clients of both companies will benefit from the increase in their respective options. Novell’s customers especially will be able to implement quality CRM applications on an open-source platform, Lowry said. “Customers have been relatively limited, to be honest, in the options they had for CRM. For our customers running SUSE Linux, they’ll have the capability of running an enterprise-strength CRM system on that platform.”
