Project Work Gets Your Foot in the Door
If you’re in the market for a new IT job, you know that part of the key to your success is getting your foot in the door and proving your worth to potential employers. Certifications may offer evidence of your skills, but many employers want hard proof that you know your stuff. Working on a project or contract basis may help.
According to a recent study from Robert Half Technology, 63 percent of chief information officers believe that it is beneficial for potential new IT employees to work on a project or contract basis before getting an offer for full-time employment. The poll, developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research firm, asked more than 1,400 CIOs from a stratified random sample of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees how valuable they thought it was to have prospective employees work on a project or contract basis as a way of evaluating them for potential full-time IT employment.
Sixteen percent of respondents said it was very valuable, while 47 percent answered “somewhat valuable.” About one-third said it was not at all valuable.
According to Katherine Spencer Lee, executive director of Robert Half Technology and author of CertMag’s Tech Careers column, employers cannot get a comprehensive view of a potential employee’s work experience and job performance from the standard resume and interviewing tools. “Project assignments allow managers to make a firsthand assessment of not only technology expertise, but also the individual’s interpersonal skills, which aren’t always evident from his or her work history,” Lee said.
