It’s been 14 days since my last newsletter. In the intervening period, 81 new viruses have been reported, for a daily average of about 5.8 (that’s up from about 4.3 for the previous reporting period). Though the total number isn’t large, it includes many nasty, powerful viruses, of which 10 are Category 2s, and one is a Category 4 (shown in bold in Table 1 below). January 26 was something of a “big day” for viruses, with 4 level 2s and one level 4 in a single day (the highest count of notable viruses in a single day for quite some time). Table 1 lists these items in chronological order:
