Mom Says, Clean Your Room

The results of a recent study conducted by Circadian Technologies, a research and consulting firm, got me thinking about the effects of the physical office environments we all work in. The study showed that improving office lighting could increase employee performance by up to 20 percent. And, if something as simple as installing new lighting fixtures in an office could improve an employee’s performance, then what kinds of performance results could be achieved if employees’ offices or cubicles were improved as well?

 

My guess is that providing a comfortable office chair and a spacious desk would certainly create an environment where employees would get more work done. In addition, the location of a person’s office or cubicle could be important. I bet that windows, office plants and crisp white office walls would also improve performance. Luckily, I am blessed to work in a high-rise in downtown Chicago, so not only does my quaint cubical come with a jaw-dropping view, I am also detached from the hectic streets of Chicago, therefore not distracted by the realities of everyday life.

 

Disposing of clutter is another aspect that so many of us nine-to-fivers forget to address on a daily basis. I don’t know about you, but when my desk is stacked to the ceiling with files, post-its, reference books and notes, my mind automatically freezes up in all of the clutter and cannot focus on the computer screen. The same concept applies for home base as well. If my feng shui is muddled up in clutter, especially in the kitchen, I always find it hard to accomplish things—even if they are simple activities like cooking, or surfing the Internet.

 

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a clean freak by any means. It just seems that physical atmosphere we surround ourselves with could have profound affects on our productivity, happiness and, perhaps, our stress levels as well. And I think that we could all benefit from a little less tension in our lives.
