Media 1 Participates United Way’s Day of Caring

Grand Haven, Mich. — Oct. 3
Most of the time, Media 1 employees spend their days in front of their computers with the lights dimmed while they write and design learning and performance solutions for companies all around the world.

But last Thursday, the team took a short trek from its office on Elliott Street to a destination in downtown Grand Haven for the seventh-annual United Way Day of Caring.

Media 1 volunteers were assigned to offer a little help to one of their neighbors: the Girl Scouts “Little House.”

This community center was originally built as a community effort on property donated by a local citizen and has been in use since 1942.

That community effort continued when Media 1 turned out in full force for the afternoon.

From landscaping and painting to some down-home spit and polish, the group rolled up their sleeves and pitched in. Gloves were handed out, and lopping shears and other gardening tools were passed around.

In a few short hours volunteers transformed the front yard and side yard from an overgrown jumble to a nicely manicured site.

Another contingent went to work indoors, cleaning and painting.

The group shared the task with volunteers from McKeough Land, Inc., veterans of the Day of Caring event.

“Media 1 was one of the 12 new companies participating in the United Way Day of Caring this year,” said Paulina Lawton, United Way’s Volunteer Center director. “We are happy to have them on board.”

Chris Willis, Media 1 CEO, echoed the sentiment.

“We are proud to be a part of this program,” Willis said. “It’s not always about whipping out the check book and writing a check — it’s about sweat equity in our community too. We’ll be back next year for sure.”
