Majoring in Gaming

The University of California, Santa Cruz, recently unveiled what might be the coolest collegiate major possible for techies this side of Sci-Fi Studies: Computer Game Design. This will be the first course of study of its kind within the UC university system.

A major like this could be expected of the school, given that fact that it’s close to Silicon Valley and because of the carefree, hippie-trippy ethos of the student body. (When UC, Santa Cruz, allowed the students to vote for a school mascot, they picked the Banana Slugs.)

But students who enroll in this major expecting it to entail easy courses that won’t ever interfere with their routine of bong hits and Frisbee golf might be surprised. The program is pretty rigorous, with equal doses of programming and design principles in coursework, as well as a year-long, start-to-finish video game development project for seniors.
