Jobs Are Out There, But You Must Be Relentless to Get One

Relentless. Diligent. Proactive. Targeted. Customized. Prepared. Creative. These are the ways that people are gaining new employment despite the worst job market in 25 years, according to ClearRock, an outplacement and coaching firm.

“People are finding jobs by being relentless, diligent, proactive and creative. The job market has shrunk, and there are more people seeking fewer available opportunities. A lot of people have become discouraged to the point of giving up and just collecting severance, if they received it, and unemployment, if they are still eligible,” said Annie Stevens, managing partner with ClearRock.

Job-seekers need to be well-positioned to capitalize in a moment's notice on any unforeseen or unexpected opportunities that present themselves, added Greg Gostanian, managing partner with ClearRock. ''Jobs happen, and a job search needs to be agile, flexible and able to spring into full steam immediately,” he said.

ClearRock offers the following advice on how to find a job in this tough employment market:

  • Be relentless. “Don't give up no matter how discouraged you may become. Take a break from job-hunting to do things you enjoy, but get right back to searching full-time when it’s over,” said Stevens.
  • Be flexible. “Be open to taking a temporary job or to contract work. These will get you in the door and give you the opportunity to show what you can do and the results you can achieve, which may lead to a full-time job later,” said Gostanian.
  • Be prepared. “Potential employers want to see that you have conducted research on their companies, including their products and services and recent financial results. Also research possible ways you can help them solve problems they may be experiencing,” said Stevens.
  • Be creative. “If you are trying to break into a new industry, present the skills and the results you have achieved in your career, and relate these to the field in which you are applying. Use terms that are meaningful to people in that industry,” said Gostanian.
  • Customize. “Tailor your resume and cover letter for each particular job. Your resume and cover letter must substantiate, as closely as possible, what the employer is looking for. Generic cover letters and resumes will be weeded out when you are competing with hundreds of people,” said Stevens.
  • Target. “Find out who the hiring managers are in the companies you want to work for, and address your communications to them directly, rather than to the human resource department. Also, only apply for jobs for which you have comparable experience and results to show,” said Gostanian.
  • Offer a “promise of performance.” “This performance pledge specifically tells prospective employers how you will deliver value, such as reducing overhead, improving profitability and lowering turnover. It explicitly demonstrates that you know their business, their issues and how to overcome them,” said Stevens.
