ISACA adds online training for CISM and CRISC exams
The saying goes that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. ISACA, having been around since 1969, is creeping up on its numerically significant 50th birthday — but don’t think that means the thriving global association of security and governance professionals is no longer able to keep up with the fast-changing IT training and certification industry.
ISACA certifications are some of the best known and most widely respected credentials in all of IT. They also tend to be generously compensated: All four of the core ISACA certifications, CISA (average annual salary: $126,540), CISM ($135,350), CGEIT ($129,740) and CRISC ($131,310) made a mark on our most recent Salary Survey 75 list.
Now IT professionals who are eager to add ISACA certifications to their résumés have a powerful new asset at their disposal. Earlier this month, ISACA announced the release of new online training for both the Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) credentials.
The release of CISM and CRISC online review courses is in keeping the precedent set earlier this year when ISACA released its first such offering, aligned to the popular Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) credential. Both new courses are self-paced and can be accessed online at the convenience of learners preparing for a certification exam.
An increasing number of certification providers are offering their own learning and review materials online. IT industry association CompTIA developed the CertMaster online training tool, released in 2014, to provide convenient access to study and learning options for those considering its popular “plus” crecentials (A+, Network+, Security+, and so forth).
The CISM course offers 17 hours of content, including a 50-question self assessment, a 75-question sample exam, and a battery of videos, interactive modules, workbooks, case studies, and more. The CRISC course is shorter, at 12 hours, but includes all of the same learning features, and also offers both a 50-questions self assessment and a 75-question sample exam.
Learners can follow a recommended outline that guides them through the available content, or pick and choose their own path. Both courses are available on a subscription basis that provides one-year access at a cost of $895. (ISACA members qualify for a $100 discount, knocking the price tag down to $795.)
ISACA’s director of training and education, Laureen Kaczmarek said in a news release announcing the new courses that each offers more value than just helping learners prepare for certification. “Not only will the review courses provide educational formats for exam preparation, but they can also act as a resource after exam completion,” Kaczmarek said.
CISM and CRISC certification exams are available on a specific annual schedule, so plan ahead if you’re aiming to take and pass either exam.
