An Oracle OS?

A few blogs ago, I talked about the possibility of Google rolling out a new operating system based on the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. It’s hardly clear what the company intends to do with this OS, though. Once completed, Goobuntu may be dispensed to the masses, or might be nothing more than an internal system. We’ll just have to wait and see on that one.

However, another tech giant may enter the OS market, and soon. There are reports that Oracle is contemplating an acquisition of Novell because of its widely used SUSE Linux offering. Oracle could then offer its customers an expanded set of software solutions that also includes business apps and databases. This would definitely raise the stakes of the competition with Microsoft and IBM for IT supremacy, and make for an instant rivalry with Linux provider Red Hat.

Say what you will about the IT industry—at least it’s never boring.
